How do I work with a graphic designer?
I often describe myself as ‘your personal graphic designer’, but I understand that unless you work with people like me in your day job, it might be hard to know what I can do for you, and how to articulate your vision for your wedding to me well enough that I can help make it a reality. Well, don’t worry - I’ve created this handy guide!
Have a think about what you want, and why
If you aren’t sure what you want in terms of style, it will be hard to find the right suppliers and in turn to tell them what you’d like them to do. If you need help to work out your vibe, check out this blog post on deciding on a style.
I would recommend keeping away from huge trends unless they really resonate with you and your personal style. Not only will this seem incongruous with what your guests know and love about you, but trends obviously aren’t timeless and you might look back and wonder why you chose what you did. This is an opportunity to make something really special and beautiful that’s all about you - so don’t squander that on trends or stationery that looks like everyone else’s.
I have a range of house designs and can also create you something completely bespoke. This is a design journey, and one that can really help you get excited about your upcoming celebrations. If you opt to work with me, I will always provide you with options and a free-flowing, open-minded feedback loop; inviting you to tell me what’s working, what isn’t and what you’d like to see. I’m not precious, so I don’t get offended by your feedback, and if you are struggling with finding a path, I will always help.
Choose the right designer
There are lots of stationery designers, graphic designers and illustrators to work with, and they all offer a different experience and end-product. You might have a friend who offers to create your wedding stationery, and if you feel that they’re the perfect option for you, that’s great!
My advice would be to pick someone who -
Can take critical feedback without getting their ego involved
Has integrity and won’t just copy other people’s work
Is prompt and transparent with their communication
Knows how to work with print, vectors and various paper stocks
Creates designs in keeping with the style you’d like. There’s no point asking a very modern digital designer to paint watercolour lemons if that’s not what they do. You won’t get what you want and they will get frustrated!
Show me what you want
You might have a Pinterest board, photographs, bookmarked Instagram posts and a camera roll of screenshots. I want to see it all! It really helps understand what you like, and is especially helpful if you don’t feel you can describe the vibe with words, as well as side-stepping any misinterpretation of the brief on my end. Please note - I will never replicate someone else’s work, but I am happy to see examples of the types of work you might like and can create a similar feel.
You can email me this, DM me on Instagram or invite me to collaborate on your Pinterest board. Whatever works for you! Additionally, if you have a wedding planner or stylist who has created a moodboard for you, you can either share this with me or I can liaise with them directly.
Book a kick-off call
I like to start the design journey getting to know you both a bit, so very often couples book in a 40 minute Zoom call to chat. It allows you to meet me, and see if I’m the right choice for you. It also allows me to understand your ideas and vision and to see if I can deliver it.
If you live in a different time zone*, have additional needs or just don’t like video calls then this is by no means a necessity. We can work together in any way that makes you feel calm, happy and excited to get stuck in. *I am super flexible, so even if you live in Australia and I’m in the UK, we can find a time that works if you’re keen to video chat!
You can book a free video call with me here.
If you have any questions, send them to me via the form on the contact page and I’d be happy to answer them!
